Nellie Bly was the eighth and final Broadway appearance by the celebrated team of William Gaxton and Victor Moore. Their first collaboration was in George and Ira Gershwin’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Of Thee I Sing (1931), where they created the roles of Wintergreen and Throttlebottom, and they revisited these roles in the Gershwins’ sequel Let ’Em Eat Cake (1933); they then appeared in Cole Porter’s Anything Goes (1934) and Leave It to Me! (1938) and in Irving Berlin’s Louisiana Purchase. Their final three joint stage appearances were in the short-running Keep ’Em Laughing, Hollywood Pinafore, and Nellie Bly. The team had earlier starred in the 1932 film Ladies Not Allowed (with Lois Moran, who had appeared with them in Of Thee I Sing and Let ’Em Eat Cake), and in 1943 they starred opposite Mae West in The Heat’s On, which also featured trumpeter Leonard Sues, who had impressed the critics in Johnny 2 x 4 and Beat the Band.
